Yellow Wagtail

The Yellow wagtail arrives in large numbers on the Alacati marsh in late March and usually stays until the beginning of May.This wagtail has so many variants .At least 8 different races in the region makes for interesting bird -watching locally as they scutter between the legs of the grazing sheep and goats, feeding on the glut of insects the animals attract.

I have been quite lucky over the past couple of seasons to photograph some great -looking variants two of which are the superciliaris and the dombrowski.

The wagtail pictured  above is yet another attractive  race 'feldegg' with its soot- black crown and bright yellow front, seen here waking from its reedbed -roost for an early breakfast
